The Week In News, But Shorter
    July 6 -12, 2026

A Weekly PropTech Newsletter bringing you industry updates from across the real estate spectrum

We spoke a few weeks ago about the importance of clean data, the right technologies and the right vendors needed to make AI implementations valuable, and an article this week reinforced that need, but emphasized that you also need deliberate decision architecture. Borrowed from behavioral economics and org theory, this means mapping the specific decisions you need to make, the data and rules that govern them, and when human review is required so agentic AI operates within clear guardrails. Property owners who redesign processes around decision-making — not just bolt AI onto existing workflows — will unlock the most reliable, long‑term value.

This week, back-to-school predictions continue to roll in, as do plans for drone delivery. We also caught up on why luxury is turning to physical retail, and how jewelers are taking a new approach to in-person too. You can find us on our LinkedIn page!

    Digital Meets Physical

Amazon Doubled AI-Referred Purchases, Year-Over-Year [MediaDailyNews] AI-referred purchases — transactions that happen because an artificial intelligence (AI) tool recommended the products to users — continue to rise. The number of these AI-driven sales is twice as high as a year ago, at least for Amazon, according to recent data.

Taco Bell’s drive-thru voice AI expands to nearly 900 restaurants [NRN] Taco Bell is expanding its drive-thru voice AI. The technology is now available in over 890 domestic restaurants across 38 states. Voice AI technology will continue to be deployed across Taco Bell’s U.S. restaurants, automating order-taking at the drive-thru speaker, adapting to each location’s menu, and providing real-time stock levels.

AI-generated fake websites are eroding consumer trust [Chain Store Age] The rise of fraudulent e-commerce sites based on AI is a troubling trend for both shoppers and retailers. Although 65% surveyed consumers, including 79% of millennial and Gen Z respondents, are confident they can identify fake websites, an overwhelming 92% agree that the rise of AI-generated content is making it significantly harder.

AI Is Forcing Real Estate Organizations to Rethink How They Make Decisions [Propmodo] The race to integrate AI into real estate organizations is moving faster than most of those organizations are ready for. Across the industry, companies are deploying AI tools for everything from lease abstraction and financial forecasting to maintenance scheduling and tenant communication, often driven more by competitive anxiety than by a clear theory of where AI actually creates durable value.

How AI is reshaping the bricks and mortar experience [RetailGazette] AI has taken the retail industry by storm in recent years. It seems that many consumers are on board with the changes. A recent report found that 64 per cent of consumers thought retailers should use AI to improve the shopping experience for their customers.

Walmart builds drone delivery capability in Greater Houston [Chain Store Age] Walmart Inc. is expanding efforts to grow its drone delivery program in the Houston market. Wing, an on-demand drone delivery provider powered by Google parent company Alphabet, said Walmart is adding eight new drone hubs across the Greater Houston area.

Former Downtown Brooklyn Macy’s Slated for Dramatic Retail Makeover [Commercial Observer] The 440,000-square-foot space— the largest block of retail space currently available in New York City and the former site of a Macy’s department store — will become BKX, a five-floor retail and amusement destination that’s being described by developers as a “next-generation cultural and commercial hub.”

Back-to-school shoppers head to mass merchants, department stores [RetailDive] In-store shoppers are expected to spend less ($521) and online shoppers are expected to spend more ($614). The most popular destination will be mass merchants, which account for 80% of all planned spending, followed by online stores, warehouse membership clubs and department stores.

ICSC: Consumers value stores for ‘simplicity,’ ‘immediacy’ [Chain Store Age] ICSC noted that as online shopping becomes more expensive and complex with shipping and transportation costs in flux, stores offer consumers simplicity, immediacy and flexibility.

Jewelry Designers Invite Clients Into Their Worlds [The New York Times] Ms. Winston is part of a growing movement among independent jewelers who are rethinking the traditional sale experience. In the past two years, more designers have opened by-appointment showrooms in cities, including New York, London, Los Angeles and Paris, driven, at least in part, by the uncertain state of jewelry retailers.

For luxury, the in-store experience still reigns [RetailDive] The store remains the dominant channel for aspirational luxury customers to make purchases and have satisfaction with their experience, according to an EY survey of more than 1,600 consumers across 11 markets making $100,000 or more.

EXCLUSIVE: Burlington’s Transformation: Downsizing Stores and Growing [WWD] In what’s nothing short of a dramatic, multiyear transformation, Burlington Stores Inc. continues to downsize stores to 25,000 gross square feet on average, from 80,000 to 100,000 square feet. It’s happening simultaneously with the off-pricer’s aggressive agenda of opening new stores.
